The Forbidden City is 961 meters long from north to south and 753 meters wide from east to west. It is surrounded by 10-meter-high walls on all sides and a 52-meter-wide moat outside the city. It is truly as solid as a fortress. The Forbidden City features four gates. Wumen stands in the south, Shenwumen in the north, Donghuamen in the east, and Xihuamen in the west.

There is a graceful corner tower at each of the four corners of the city wall. A saying among the people describes the complex structure with nine beams, eighteen pillars, and seventy-two ridges. The buildings in the Forbidden City are divided into two parts: the outer court and the inner court. The Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Central Harmony, and the Hall of Preserving Harmony, known as the three major halls, anchor the center of the outer court. They host grand ceremonies for the nation. The Hall of Wenhua and the Hall of Wuying complement the left and right wings.
The Palace of Heavenly Purity, Hall of Jiaotai, and Palace of Earthly Tranquility are the central trio. They are the principal residences of the emperor and empress.Behind them is the Imperial Garden. The East and West Six Palaces flank the three rear palaces. These are residences for concubines.

Buddhist structures including Tianqiong Palace grace the east of East Six Palaces. The west features buildings like Zhongzheng Hall. Beyond the Outer and Inner Courts, the complex includes the Outer East and West Roads. South Three Houses, known also as Xiefang Hall, serves as the residence for princes. Ningshou Palace, a Qianlong-era emperor’s retreat, lies to the south of Outer East Road. To the north of this road are Cining and Shoukang Palaces, the homes of empress dowagers. Yinghua Hall, a Buddhist venue, is located south of Outer West Road. Other structures are found in the north.
